In well-prepared and moisture-saturated soil, cauliflower is planted at varying spacings depending on the cultivar’s growth habit.
Crop Rotation for Cauliflower
Cauliflower and other crops from the Brassicaceae family should not be grown on the same land for at least 3 years, especially in soils with a more acidic reaction (higher risk of clubroot).
The term “crop rotation” refers to the correct spatial and temporal rotation of crops in your garden. In other words, crop rotation combines the terms “crop succession” (temporal crop rotation) and “rotation” (spatial crop rotation). Without coordinating crop succession and rotation, crop rotation, as a broader concept, could not be properly implemented.
Planting Cauliflower
Earlier, less vigorous cultivars like the Erfurt type are usually planted at a spacing of 50 x 50 cm, achieving a density of 4 plants per square meter. More vigorous cultivars are planted with row spacing of 60 – 80 cm and within-row spacing of 40 – 70 cm, while “mini cauliflower” with heads 5 – 8 cm in diameter is planted at a density of 20 – 40 plants per square meter.
The planting time depends on the type of cultivar to be grown, and possible planting dates are listed in the following table:
