The choice of herbicides and their application time depends on the composition of the weeds (broadleaf or narrowleaf, annual or perennial), the size of the weeds, the type of soil, and the method of celery cultivation.
Before Transplanting
Before transplanting, a trifluralin-based preparation can be applied.
Before Weed Emergence (Pre-emergence)
Contact herbicides based on glyphosate can be applied before weed emergence. Alternatively, herbicides with residual action can be used.
After Weed Emergence (Post-emergence)
Celery is sensitive to the application of herbicides before emergence, so herbicides are more commonly used after weed emergence.
Crop | Active Ingredient | l/ha kg/ha | Time of Application | Spectrum of Action |
---|---|---|---|---|
Carrot, Parsnip, Celery, Fennel, Dill | Glyphosate | 2 – 4 l 1) or 4 – 8 l 2) | After sowing but before crop emergence | Controls all emerged weeds |
Carrot, Parsnip | Pendimethalin | 3 – 4 | After sowing, before emergence | Annual narrowleaf and some broadleaf weeds |
Carrot, Parsnip | Metribuzin | 0.25 – 0.5 | After sowing, before emergence | Annual broadleaf weeds |
Note: These herbicides are not registered in Croatia for this use.
- In small volume
- In larger volume
Herbicides approved in Croatia and worldwide for use in crops from the Apiaceae family (Table from the book “Vegetable Pests” by M. Maceljski and collaborators).
Weeds are also mechanically destroyed through inter-row cultivation.
